Education

Moorpark College: AS for Transfer in CS, Math and Physics
UCLA: B.S. in Computer Science (in-progress)
- My name is Phi Nguyen. I'm a rising Senior at UCLA. My passion for computers began at young age when my uncle introduced me to computers at his gaming center. My love for computers has grown since then, which made me determined to set my career as an engineer.

- Interesting fact: I was a participant at the 2023 Summer Hackathon for Engineering Students, where I and two friends built an Iron Man gauntlet with functional sensors and info screen, where we won the award for the Most Innovative Electrical Design.

- I worked as ML/AI Fellow with Qualcomm in partnership with Break Through Tech Program in Fall 2023. I worked in a team where we develop and fine-tune a Computer Vision model that can perform image and object recognition from surveillance footage. We aim to adopt this technology to detect armed individuals to support public safety. I was under the incredible mentorship of Aastha Singh, who is a Camera Modeling Engineer at Qualcomm.

Projects

Project 1

Web Server with Image Hosting

  • Built a web server using C++ and Boost that can host images for a website. This was done in a team of 4 and as the Capstone Project for my major at UCLA.
  • Implemented a config parser that can parse various HTTP requests and perform robust format checks and validations.
  • Set up Google Cloud Build for CI/CD and server monitoring, which allows for more streamlined deployment and development.
  • Implemented image upload and deletion via HTTP endpoints with strict file system validation and fault tolerance.
  • Achieved 85%+ unit/integration test coverage and co-authored detailed API documentation to support cross-team collaboration.
  • Tech stack: C++, Boost, OpenSSL, Docker, googleTest, Google Cloud Build, cmake
Project 1

Autism Screening App

  • Built a website in 36 hours with 2 developers for the non-profit organization Smiles for Speech using React and Firebase, supporting early autism screening in underserved Ghanaian communities. Placed 2nd overall.
  • Implemented Autism severity tracking, personalized recommendations, and PDF export of results.
  • Built an Admin page allowing the organization to monitor trends, identify common symptoms, and analyze data at the profile level.
  • Tech stack: React + Vite, Firebase, CSS, Recharts, jdPDF
Project 1

ClassSync

  • Working with four other students, we developed a UCLA Degree Audit Report (DAR) website tailored for CS students. The traditional DAR system is notoriously slow and difficult to use. Our website aims to provide a more modern interface and improve navigation responsiveness.
  • My contribution: I established the integration between Firebase and React, enabling seamless frontend and backend communication for our project. I designed and implemented fundamental database operations for my team, ensuring smooth data handling. Additionally, I developed the website's authentication system, featuring a robust sign-up and sign-in mechanism and securely allocates a personalized set of classes to each user. I was also in charge of the backend infrastructure to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Tools used: React, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Firebase, NodeJS, Git.
Project 1

Iron Man Gauntlet

  • Designed a gauntlet within 48 hours with functional sensors and real-time data transmission to a website.
  • My contribution: Developed an Arduino-based circuit with ultrasonic, air quality, and temperature/humidity sensors, combined with an OLED display for real-time data, and an LED for air quality or fire warnings. Collaborated with website and CAD team members to successfully transfer data to the website in near-instant, with a delay of only 3ms. Presented the design to a panel of judges and received recognition for the Most Innovative Electrical Design.
  • Check out my team's pictures and field run of the gauntlet via the "Showcase" button. The field run involves a gauntlet wearer to go through different types of hazards/rooms (not actually dangerous for obvious reason). Me and another friend will be inside the Makerspace workshop guessing what type of room it is based on the data the sensor sends to the website which we monitor inside the Makespace workshop.
  • Tools used: Arduino Nano, Arduino IDE, Javascript
Project 1

Covid Effects

  • Collaborated with 4 students, we built a research website using WordPress analyzing the major impacts that Covid has made with visualizations accompanied with analyses backed by peer-reviewed research papers.
  • My contribution:In this project, I served as both a web designer and a data specialist.
  • As a data specialist, I was responsible for all the information on the “Narrative – Spread & Impact” page. I provided detailed analyses and visualizations to help readers grasp the severe impact of Covid-19 worldwide. Utilizing the WHO’s global dataset and data from the US Department of Defense, I created charts and timelines that illustrated the virus’s spread. Additionally, I employed external sources to analyze the virus’s effects on both developed and developing countries.
  • In my role as a web designer, I oversaw typography styling, animations for all pages except the home page, and the overall format for each narrative page in collaboration with my co-designer, Yu-Ting. I also managed the “About Us” page, providing a three-level breakdown of the website, writing the current bio, and including proper acknowledgments at the end. Furthermore, I designed the header, footer, and page titles, ensuring smooth transitions and a cohesive design.
  • Tools used: WordPress, Tableau, Social Explorer, Timeline JS
